Our Online Community
The Moonwise Forum, our on-line community, is steadily growing. It now features new areas for particular spiritual paths, and more of these can be added if there is demand. In just a month or so, there have been almost 5,000 posts, and by the time you read this, that milestone might well have been achieved. Do join in our posting competition. It gives prolific posters the chance to win some desirable Moonwise prizes!

Moonwise Calendar 2013
Maggie Organ has already finished her pictures for the 2013 calendar, and I think they are the best ever. I can’t wait to share them with you, later in the year. I am currently working on updating the sky maps, so that they’re even more accurate and responsive. Don’t forget that you can now see the current month’s page online.

This is Willow Moon, and I am sitting in the lovely warm spring sunshine writing this, here on the Sussex coast. Here in our northern lands, this is now the time to become more active, and engage with the projects that we’ve hatched in the darkness of winter. In the south, autumn is now underway. This year, Willow Moon runs from 23 March to 21 April 2012.
In the sky, the spectacular pairing of Venus and Jupiter is now past its best, as Jupiter fades and moves slowly down towards the sunset. Venus carries on getting brighter, and this is still a wonderful month for planets. On the evenings of 25 and 26 March, look to see the new crescent moon near to Venus and Jupiter, and then Venus passing in front of the Pleiades on 3 April. Mars is also past its best, but still shines brightly not far from Regulus in Leo. But as Mars moves away from its closest with Earth this year, Saturn’s turn comes this month, as it reaches its closest on 15 April, and shines prominently near to Spica in Virgo, a little round to the east from Mars. With binoculars or a telescope, look for its lovely rings, and for its bright moons Rhea and Titan. Mercury swings strongly into the southern hemisphere morning sky later in the month. From the north, try to see it below the old crescent moon on 18 April.
Easter, in the Western Christian tradition, is on 8 April this year. Orthodox Easter or Pascha falls a week later. The Paschal full moon is on 6 April, and the Jewish festival of Passover or Pesach starts that evening. 5 April is the day of the great Jain festival Mahavira Jayanti, and on 14 April comes Sikh New Year, and the celebration of the birth of Guru Nanak. The Bahá’í festival of Ridván starts at dark moon on 21 April. In case you read this in time, and you are in Europe (except Russia, Belarus and Iceland), don’t forget to put your clocks forward this weekend (24-25 March).
As well as events marking the religious festivals, this month sees the Oxford-Cambridge boat race on 7 April, during the Easter weekend, and the English Grand National on the following Saturday, 14 April. The London Marathon takes place at the beginning of Hawthorn Moon, on 22 April. That same day sees the first round of the French presidential election. Here in Sussex, I will be celebrating the centenary of the birth of the great Harry Hay in Worthing on 7 April, and swimming in Brighton on 14 April in a fundraiser for the Naked Bike Ride in June. For links to more information about all of these, see the Moonwise events page.
Willow Moon’s Birthchart
Here is the central part of a chart for someone born at Avebury at the beginning of Willow Moon, 5am GMT on 23 March 2012. Pluto is still a strong influence this month, and indeed is part of a grand trine (the green triangle), suggesting wonderful possibilities. There are lots of planets with the Sun and Moon in Aries, suggesting plenty of energy for new beginnings, though the green and nurturing Ceres (the sickle-shaped symbol) is not well placed. When I am finished working through the still appreciable waiting list for birthcharts, I will announce a new, more streamlined service. Stay tuned!
